CJ-1010-Criminal Justice The E-Portfolio assignment for this class was a small essay response to this question.

In your opinion, do you believe that police officers should have a college education? Does it make for a better officer? If you believe that officers should have a college education…then, what level of education? (i.e., Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree?). How about for SGT.’s, LT.’s, CAPT.’s, and Chiefs? Would salaries need to be adjusted along with any educational requirements?

It is said that the insularity of police subcultural influences may well be softened by educational contact with other segments of contemporary society. And, that police professionals will be better eqiuipped to deal with the highly sophisticated investigative techniques of the 20th Century [Johnson, H. A., Wolfe, N. T., & Jones, M. (2008), History of criminal Justice (4th Ed.). Newark, NJ: Matthew Bender & Company, Inc./LexisNexis Group., pp. 321-322].

This class was a good introduction to law enforcement. I am thankful I was able to take this class. I do feel that an education is very important to a police officer. I plan to continue my education any way possible, whether I am attending school or I am training on the job.

CJ-1340-Criminal Investigations The E-Portfolio assignment for this class was a term paper about the Fort Hood Shooting.  While writing the term paper we were to use any of the applicable investigative techniques we learned from our text book. Along with doing the term paper we needed to do an opinion as to whether or not we think it was an act of terrorism or a single and separate act of mass murder.

Criminal Investigations taught me many things that I know I will use in my career field on a regular basis. The assessments and discussions were very valuable in instructing me on the vast techniques used in the field of Investigations. Although I found it difficult to write my term paper and include the techniques I learned, I could see the areas I would have used them had I actually been a part of the investigation. It was hard writing the term paper because the only sources I had to use were things I had read on various news websites. If I had actually been on sight as an Investigator I could have personally conducted the Interviews of witnesses and associates of the accused Nidal Hasan. I would have Photographed the crime scene, searched the computer apartment and effects of Hasan, and done forensic testing of the bullet casings and weapons used in the crime. It was very neat to see the various investigative techniques come out as I researched the shooting at Fort Hood.
